Is Beef Tallow Good for Psoriasis? An Honest Look
Share
Beef tallow can soften psoriasis plaques and take the edge off the tightness and scaling. It won't touch the cause. Psoriasis is an autoimmune condition, not a dry-skin problem, so no moisturiser, however close it sits to your skin's own fats, switches off the inflammation underneath. Here's what tallow can realistically do for psoriasis-prone skin, what the research and the patient forums actually say, and how to tell if it's worth the jar.
Psoriasis isn't dry skin, and that changes what "helps" means
Psoriasis comes from an overactive immune signal that speeds up skin cell turnover. It isn't caused by a lack of oil in the skin.
In skin without psoriasis, cells take about four weeks to form, rise to the surface, and shed. In a psoriasis plaque, that whole cycle can compress into four to seven days. The skin can't keep up. You get the thick, silvery scale, the redness underneath, the cracking at the joints. A moisturiser sits on top of all this. It can soften what's already there. It has no way of telling the immune system to slow down, because that signal doesn't come from the surface. It comes from T-cells deep in the dermis. This is the gap between "feels better" and "is treated," and it matters more for psoriasis than for almost any other skin complaint.
So can beef tallow actually help?
For comfort, yes. For the disease itself, no.
A 2025 review of beef tallow skincare claims published in PMC concluded there's currently insufficient evidence either way for tallow's effect on psoriasis. Not proof it helps. Not proof it doesn't. Just not enough data. That's a more honest answer than most of what circulates on social media. On Reddit's r/Psoriasis, one commenter put it more bluntly than any dermatologist would: smearing tallow on your skin will have zero impact on the inflammation underneath. At best, it'll hydrate the plaque and make the scale less noticeable.
Other corners of the same conversation tell a different story. A Facebook psoriasis support group has threads of people saying tallow balm calmed flare-ups that steroid creams hadn't touched. Vintage Tradition's customer reviews include people describing visible improvement within days. Beef tallow's fatty-acid profile is genuinely close to the lipids already present in human skin, which is likely why it absorbs without the greasy film some petroleum-based creams leave. Closeness to your skin's own chemistry is not the same thing as treating an autoimmune flare, but it does explain why a fat that sinks in fast, rather than sitting on top, would feel different on plaques that are already cracked and shedding.
Put the two camps together and the realistic picture is: some people get real, noticeable comfort. Nobody gets a cure. Anyone telling you otherwise is selling something.
Tallow vs eczema vs psoriasis: not the same job
Eczema is mostly a barrier problem: something gets in, moisture gets out, the skin reacts. Psoriasis is an immune system problem: the cells multiply too fast regardless of what's touching the surface. Same moisturiser, two different jobs.
| Eczema | Psoriasis | |
|---|---|---|
| Root cause | Weakened skin barrier; irritants in, moisture out | Autoimmune signal overproducing skin cells |
| Typical look | Red, itchy patches, sometimes weeping | Thick, silvery-scaled plaques, often elbows, knees, scalp |
| What tallow can do | Reinforce the barrier, lock in moisture | Soften scale, ease tightness and itch |
| What tallow can't do | Replace prescribed treatment for severe flares | Slow the immune signal driving cell turnover |
| Pairs best with | Fragrance-free routine, patch testing | Dermatologist-guided treatment plan |
Plenty of people manage both at once. Either way, tallow is the same supporting layer: comfort, not cure.
If you're going to try it, a few things actually matter
Fewer ingredients, no added fragrance. Psoriasis-prone skin is already inflamed, and fragrance is one of the most common topical irritants going. We make our Tallow Glow balm in an unscented version for exactly this reason, and our Simple Tallow Soap skips fragrance entirely.
Know where the fat came from. Halal sourcing isn't just a religious checkbox. It forces traceability back to a specific animal and a specific render, which matters when you're putting something on skin that's already compromised. Vague "natural moisturiser" labelling tells you nothing about what's actually in the jar.
Patch test before you go anywhere near an active plaque. A small amount on the inside of your forearm, left for 48 hours. If nothing happens, you're probably fine to use it more broadly. Our guide to using a tallow balm walks through application by area, including where to go lighter on already-cracked skin.
What dermatologists actually say
Mostly: caution, not rejection. Dermatologist Dr. Dray, reviewing the tallow trend on YouTube, frames it as one emollient option among many rather than a breakthrough. Useful for some skin types, unremarkable for others, not a substitute for anything prescribed. That's roughly where the clinical consensus sits. Tallow isn't dangerous for most people, but it isn't a psoriasis treatment either, and nobody with a medical degree is claiming it is.
Air conditioning is its own trigger
For UAE residents, psoriasis doesn't really get a season off.
The American Academy of Dermatology lists dry, cold weather as one of the most common psoriasis triggers, the kind that flares plaques every winter in colder climates. Run the air conditioning for six months a year, and indoor air gets just as dry as a cold northern winter, just on a different calendar. The National Psoriasis Foundation makes the opposite-season point too: heat and sweat set off plenty of flares on their own. So the walk from punishing outdoor heat into an over-cooled mall or office is a double hit, sweat first, then dry recycled air pulling moisture straight back out. A heavier, fast-absorbing balm applied right after a shower, while skin is still slightly damp, does more work here than it would somewhere with ordinary humidity.
Frequently asked questions
Is beef tallow good for psoriasis?
It can ease the dryness, tightness, and visible scale of a plaque. It does not treat the autoimmune process causing psoriasis.
Can beef tallow cure psoriasis?
No. Nothing topical cures psoriasis. It's a chronic condition that's managed, not cured, and that's true whether you're using tallow, a steroid cream, or a biologic.
Will beef tallow make psoriasis worse?
For most people, no. A small number of people react to animal-derived fats the same way they'd react to any new product. Patch test first, especially near active plaques.
What's the actual difference between eczema and psoriasis?
Eczema is a barrier issue: moisture escapes, irritants get in. Psoriasis is an immune issue: skin cells are told to multiply far faster than normal. They can look similar and still need different management.
Is unscented tallow better for psoriasis-prone skin?
Generally, yes. Fragrance is one of the most common topical irritants, and inflamed skin has less tolerance for it than normal skin does.
Should I see a dermatologist before trying tallow for psoriasis?
If plaques are widespread, painful, or spreading, yes. Tallow is a comfort layer you add to a routine, not a substitute for diagnosis or prescribed treatment.
How do I patch test beef tallow?
Apply a small amount to the inside of your forearm. Wait 48 hours. No redness, itching, or bumps means it's reasonable to try elsewhere, slowly, and not on broken skin first.
